I never got around to posting about Fahrenheit 9/11, which we saw on Friday night. I intend to get around to it at some point, but until then...

more from shaq...

"But can't nobody [mess] with me. I'm like toilet paper, Pampers and toothpaste. I'm definitely proven to be effective."

it's funny. spend one full day and night without interacting with another human being and it really changes your perspectives on things.

I caught an episode of My So Called Life tonight, one of the better episodes of the short-lived series, and it all made perfect sense, just like it did when I was 16. that was 9 years ago. no matter how much older we think we are, or how much maturing we think we've done, I guess those basic feelings of loneliness, self-doubt, self-consciousness, and insecurity never completely go away. Just because they're not always there doesn't mean they won't resurface from time to time.

I don't know what's worse: feeling like no one you're close to really knows you, or having the realization that such a trite and cliched thought has occurred to you.

today:
pedicure
chai tea latte
the new sedaris book
movies movies movies (station agent, thirteen, laurel canyon)

there's a common theme in all of those movies I watched today. i'd be a fool to think that was a coincidence.

ben folds five - brick

shit. pokey reese is hurt. According to SOSH, "Team is describing it as a severe sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament of the MCP joint in his left thumb. He was taken to St. E's for an MRI. He tore the same ligament last season and had season-ending surgery on it."

I'm thinking there may be foul play involved. I'm looking at you, cesar crespo.

speaking of the sox, four a half games back? what happened?

we saw dodgeball and saved last week. both are wicked funny and worth seeing. tomorrow night it's fahrenheit 9/11. I will be so disappointed if there aren't ring wing protesters surrounding the theater.

david sedaris has a new book out. someone buy it for me.

oh, and the suits are in town today. i challenge anyone to tell me what is worse than corporate humor.

the answer is nothing. not one fucking thing. kill me.

so after years of laughing about how shaq couldn't make a free throw to save his life, and praying that someone - anyone - would knock the Lakers off their throne, I realize that I was wrong about Shaq. Somewhere along the line, I confused my feelings of love and hate, and actually, I quite like Shaq. It started when I heard his interviews on The Ticket, because how can you hate any guy with a sense of humor like that? And then his public fued with kobe...if you're forced to pick sides, how do you not side with Shaq? And then the icing..this article on espn.com. The whole thing is full of reasons to like the guy, but this is at the top of the list. When asked about how he has been wronged by the Lakers organization, shaq had this to say...

"But just don't tell me one thing and do another. Because you insult my intelligence like that. Just tell me. I ain't tripping. But the good thing about this country we live in, somebody will want this. Someone will want the Diesel."

Someone will want the Diesel.

I love this guy.

pixies - live in minneapolis

another Summerbash in the books, and all I have to show for it are a dozen different tanlines/sunburns from several different bathing suits/tank tops. i look like one of those paint-by-numbers pictures.

the Austin City Limits lineup isn't complete yet, but thus far, it's pretty impressive. I was leaning towards selling our tickets, because I could really use another $140, but now I'm having second thoughts. two full days in Austin with friends, beer, and these bands:
pixies
modest mouse
wilco
the roots
franz ferdinand
broken social scene
old 97s
josh rouse
the killers
cat power
spoon
centro-matic

...among others. yeah, maybe I'll go.

six feet under's fourth season started tonight. we started watching this last year and with the help of some friends and their VCRs, got caught up with the first three seasons pretty quickly. tonight's episode was as depressing and beautiful as expected. this show is so damn good. last season was a bit disappointing, but I don't doubt it will return to brilliance this year. and if not...well, there's always Nate to look at.

the red sox are 4 games behind the MFYs. what happened? speaking of, tickets for the sox/yanks games in july at fenway are currently going for a couple thousand dollars on ebay. who seriously pays that much for a july baseball game?

because talking hockey in late june is just as ridiculous, i'll just say that I would kill to see this guy in black and orange and leave it at that.

game 4 of the nba finals is calling my name. this is the first time i've cared about the nba all season, but if there's a chance that larry brown will win a championship, and beat the lakers to do it, then I'm in. go pistons.

red house painters - all mixed up

a few years ago, i fell asleep to the red house painters' songs for a blue guitar every single night of a long boston winter.

it will forever remind me of darkness, thunderstorms, awkward first kisses, and intensely vivid dreams.

speaking of boston, I booked a trip back to my favorite coast today. I'll head to philly on july 17th, spend 5 days there with the family and then spend 4 days in Boston with monkeyface. it just so happens that the yankees will be in town that weekend too...so here's to hoping i can score some red sox tickets.

the stills - still in love song

so my impatience got the best of me, as usual, and I went to Central Market on saturday morning for the sushi class. It was very cool...we spent two and a half hours slurping miso soup and learning how to make some yummy sushi rolls. and let's be honest...mine looked better than those of anyone sitting near me. i knew i was japanese in a past life. i knew it. anyway, i bought some tuna steak at whole foods yesterday and i'll be making sushi tomorrow night...so we'll see how it goes. and don't worry...pictures are coming.

I was planning on commenting about the DDay anniversary last weekend, but I never got around to it. I went to France when I was around 14 and walking on the beach at Normandy is one of the most amazing, emotional things I've done. ever.

this past weekend was really enjoyable, which is a good thing since I have to work 6 days this week, including a loooong 14 hour day on saturday in the hot texas sun. anyway, this past weekend was spent mountain biking, celebrating jessi and chris' birthdays, kicking cocky boy ass in scene it, mini golfing, watching a horse race on tv (what?), stuffing my face with sushi and vegetable tempura, and enjoying electricity. sounds funny, sure..but go without it for three days and see how you feel.

i've done 25 years of research and now i can safely say: mosquitos love jewish blood.

ok, so last night I took chris to Piranha for birthday dinner, and we sat at the sushi bar and enjoyed the best sushi I've ever had in my life. Now I've been craving sushi all day, and a quick Google of the words "sushi," "Dallas," and "learn" led me to this:

electricity is back. and i'm finally clean. weeee....

so yeah, I stole these from slatch, but that's only because it's one of the greatest sites ever.

trailer for the new movie garden state. It's worth watching because:
1. two words: postal service
2. it looks damn good
3. peter sarsgaard is rocking THE 1985 andrew mccarthy haircut

also, more martin freeman is on the way....

and because you, too, are madly in love with michael ian black, go to slatch.com and find the may 24th entry. there's a pretty long clip of MIB's next guest appearance on Reno 911 and it's unbelieveable.

electricity is totally underrated.

we're now on hour 43 without power, and I'm not far from losing my mind. I can live without the TV and computer, though I do feel a bit out of touch with the world once I leave work. It's weird to be at home around 10pm, in a pitch black room, and realize you probably have to wait until tomorrow to find out if the Red Sox won. But the refrigerator, stove, microwave, toaster oven, air conditioning...those come in handy during a Texas summer. So last night we collected most of the things in our fridge and packed them into coolers full of ice. Then we went out for Thai food since we obviously can't cook...and hey, any excuse to get some pad thai....

For the non-Texans, we had a wicked storm on Tuesday night that knocked power out in half a million DFW homes. There was another storm last night which I enjoyed slightly more, since I was in bed as opposed to stuck at a movie theater 30 minutes from home. That reminds me...

Mean Girls. Such a great fucking movie. Who knew? Seriously. Go see it.

This coming weekend should be full of birthdays, food, swimming, and board games. Jesus, I sound like I'm 12.

Speaking of weekends, last weekend was excellent. The Third Annual Memorial Day Bash was probably the most fun yet, solely because I wasn't sick this year. We raised $350 for a friend who lost her home in a fire, ate some incredible food thanks to friends who really know how to cook, bonded in the hot tub, drank way too many shots, found a new favorite board game, and laughed as much as always.

oh, and happy birthday chris. you're an old man, but i love you anyway.
